When I walked down D’Mall in Boracay I though it would be the same touristy shopping experience I have had on my many trips to Asia in the past. But I was positively surprised. I stumbled upon a small boutique called Here & Now where I discovered how beautiful and fashionable recycled, reused materials could look like. Most of the products are one-of-a-kind accessories such as bags, purses, home accessories and unique gifts made of reused and recycled materials. I spoke to the owner Eva-Marie when she made a Skype call to her employee while I happen to be there. She is Swedish and visited Boracay for the first time in 1984. She couldn’t stop thinking about returning and decided to move and reside on the island. Here & Now is the perfect name for her shops. She told me it stems from the quote by the poet Rumi “ This moment is all there is “ and Eva lives by living in the moment. She started EcoVie Philippines with her business partner Stéphane Pando to help give jobs to people who are not as fortunate as we are and at the same time use recycled materials. The cool recycled kite sail bags in bright colours are perfect when going on a boat trip along with the woven juice pouches. I couldn’t help myself to get some cosmetics bag made out of juice pouches with zip closure. I can think loads of ways to use them when traveling.
I also ended up purchasing unique handmade Christmas ornaments from recycled aluminium soda cans. One Sprite and one Coke in heart shape. Christmas is only 3 ½ months away and I can’t wait to put it on the Christmas tree and have a piece of Boracay knowing I made a difference. How to you feel when buying an Eco friendly garment or accessory ?

I learned to say Magusap tayo mamaya in Tagalog

It means Speak soon 🙂
